The mission of the Urban Ranger Corps is to help prepare at-risk inner city youth (14 – 18) for wholesome, responsible and productive futures through a program of disciplined work experience and service in their community; leadership development; and individualized planning for post-High School careers.
At-risk youth in economically distressed neighborhoods and communities deserve to have access to personal career counseling and exposure to new developmental experiences and potential opportunities which are routinely available to their peers in more affluent communities. The Urban Ranger Program works to promote, support and provide access to such services, experiences and opportunities.
For nine weeks during the summer, at-risk youth learn important pre-employment skills by working on projects to repair, paint and restore the yards of homes owned by low-income families, especially the homes of seniors or households headed by a single parent or (often) grand parent.
When the school year begins in September , the year-round phase of Career Management/Coaching phase begins. The work of this phase is based on the Individual Career Plan (ICP) developed for each ranger during the summer phase. The Career Plan Manager meets with rangers on a bi-weekly basis to ensure they are carrying out the action steps set forth in their ICP’s.
